Three Types of Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)

Types of UPS

Reliability is one of the main reasons businesses hesitate to trade
in their traditional phone lines. Since hosted PBX systems operate over
the internet, power outages and surges pose a unique threat to
communications. Depending on the office environment, the risk of service
downtime may be greater, which is why businesses should purchase an
uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect against voltage spikes,
short-term power loss, noise, and distortion.

Troubleshooting VoIP Quality Issues

Overall, VoIP offers excellent call quality. On occasion, though,
some users experience service deterioration, most commonly in the form
of echo, choppiness, or delay. This is because VoIP breaks down audio
into light packets for easy transfer over the internet. During this
process, networks and hardware devices sometimes get in the way.
Luckily, we’ve pinpointed all of the common problem areas. Take a look
at the infographic below, provided kindly by Software Advice, and then let’s get started.

Troubleshoot VoIP Call Quality issues

Troubleshooting VoIP Quality Issues

How to Conduct a VoIP Speed Test

VoIP users can determine the health of their network by measuring its
packet transfer efficiency — the speed and success rate of trafficking
data from source to destination. Thankfully, running a VoIP speed test
is very simple. For an automated check, use Direct-VoIP's free online service. Alternatively, users can take initiative and tinker harmlessly with a computer’s command prompt. Note: You should know your VoIP provider's IP address before continuing.

How to Adjust a Router's QoS

VoIP Router QoSVoIP
depends greatly on a network’s available bandwidth, so if you regularly
experience poor call quality, it may indicate a problem with the
router. Thankfully, it takes only a few minutes to reprioritize a
network. After that, your communications system will be up and running
better than before.

VoIP Encryption Protocols

VoIP Encryption
Without VoIP encryption, data packets in-transit are susceptible to loss, theft, and tampering. Interception of an audio file could lead to unwanted eavesdropping or voice recording — both of which pose a major privacy risk to your business. While some VoIP clients include an encryption protocol, businesses should seek further measures of security. Currently, there are software options available on the market (i.e. Zfone), but network-savvy individuals may prefer to configure their own solution in the following ways.

Setting the Date & Time on your Polycom IP Phone

Is your Polycom phone flashing an incorrect date and time?

Polycom IP335
This is because it has no time server set and needs to be configured to auto-sync with an NTP (Network Time Protocol) server. Read on to see how to correct this once and for all.  Many will dismiss the issue of having an incorrect date and time on Polycom IP phones simply because they are typically configured by a boot server. There are still many Polycom users that have manually configured phones, and it is important the devices display the correct date and time.

The following steps will help to get your date and time corrected on your manually configured Polycom IP phone. Please keep in mind that this tutorial is intended for the average VoIP user so I will go over some fairly basic details.

The Components of a VoIP Hard Phone

VoIP hard phoneAlthough
some VoIP hard phones may resemble traditional desk phones, they
provide users with enhanced QoS and security. While ATA adapters allow
users to reuse old analogue devices, VoIP hard phones have been designed
to work over the internet, making them the best solution available.
Unlike softphone alternatives, such phones also operate independently,
meaning they do not require a computer to run. The following components
define VoIP devices:
  • IP protocol compatibility and data encryption software
  • RJ-45 ports (LAN) and RJ-11 ports (PSTN); Ethernet may be used to route the device to a PC for unified data usage
  • A keypad/touchpad for placing calls -- some devices come with LCD screens and programmable feature keys
  • Speaker, receiver, and headset jack for hands-free usage
  • Batter, AC, or Ethernet power supply

Different VoIP Hard Phones

VoIP devices vary in capability. The
features discussed above outline what you may find in the most basic
VoIP hard phone. These are great for entry-level users who do not need
full system access. Intermediate devices, however, incorporate more
buttons, allowing further independence away from the computer.
Higher-end devices may even include colour displays, touch-screens, and
video telephony support.

Woman recording a professional on hold messageThe Value of Having An On Hold Message with music

Have you called your office and been put on hold lately? What do you hear? Music? A radio station playing ‘Golden Oldies” or worse, radio ads playing your competitions commercials? Or are you giving them the silent treatment? Business owners and top level executives should realize that what the caller hears during this hold time has an impact on how your business is perceived on the phone. Mental images may start to form in their mind; “I hate that song because it reminds me of my ex” or “did they forget about me? Or am I still on hold?”

Industry Reports Growing Number of Mobile VoIP Users: Is Your Business On-Board?

According to a recent IBISWorld study, 30-million Americans rely on IP telephony services day-to-day. Infonetics Research also reached a similar conclusion in their past survey, estimating that the number of mobile VoIP users grew 550 percent globally last year. By the end of 2013, many market experts expect this total to exceed 1-billion users. While Ovum Research Group predicts that VoIP revenues will hit $479-billion by 2020, the momentum carried by the mobile VoIP market could expand the industry more than companies first thought.

Changing Office Locations? Here’s How to Move a VoIP System with Ease

How to Move a VoIP System

For small businesses with on-premise PBX, moving offices may be a laborious
undertaking. Thankfully, MyPBX offers system hosting offsite, meaning
customers deal with less hardware configuration and maintenance. For
those changing locations, this is great news! Simply carry your phones
over and plug them in. Essentially, it's that easy to move a VOIP system
— there’s just a few things you’ll want to double check before making
the transition.

Changing Office Locations? Here’s How to Move a VoIP System with Ease

Global Commerce and VoIP Technology

The
evolution of information and communications technology (ITC) has
changed the way people do business. Productivity applications such as
instant messaging and cloud computing permit collaborations that never
could have worked before. With the addition of IP telephony, global
commerce grew more efficient, accessible, and profitable for businesses
all over the world. Today, VoIP is an essential component of any
communications infrastructure. Although the technology is readily
available, however, the way in which businesses use it is still
important. Two modern uses for VoIP technology that have contributed
greatly to the growth of globalization are:

Is VoIP Technology Environmentally Friendly?

VoIP Environmentally FriendlyBusinesses
are well aware of the fact hosted PBX saves money, but the question
still remains whether or not VoIP impacts the environment positively or
negatively. Since businesses experience both direct and indirect
benefits through VoIP, in order to determine its ecological footprint,
one must look at the hardware as well as how it is applied.

Complement VoIP with These Unified Communications Solutions

Companies tend to throw around the term unified communications
without ever offering a definition. Although the term may seem
self-explanatory, it has many elements to unpack and explore. In its
most basic form, a unified communications system works to centralize all
streams of communication in a particular environment, enabling
employees to call, message, and transfer data quickly and effortlessly.

VoIP customers have already taken the first step in unifying their
communications. Through conferencing, call routing, speech-to-text, and
many other unique hosted PBX features, companies reap the benefits of
receiving and placing calls from one powerful system. In-office and
between locations, however, businesses may find it advantageous to take
their systems to the next level by adding a few extra solutions.

Why VoIP Trumps Skype and Google Talk for Inbound Calling

Once you’ve acquired a virtual number and have launched the PBXww interface,
you will need to configure a device with your person object. The menu
that appears will allow you to select a device to receive incoming
calls. Due to sheer familiarity, many people choose Skype or Google Talk
without realizing the benefits of using a VoIP device (SIP client).

The Benefits of Call Recording through Your VoIP System

In the
past, call recording required a loudspeaker and an external recording
device. Nowadays, we have apps on our smartphones and plug-in gadgets
that have improved the quality of call recording. For businesses,
however, installing such hardware can become costly and inconvenient.
Luckily, most VoIP systems now have integrated call recording.
