Seven Free Softphone Applications - DirectVoIP

Some VoIP users prefer not to use desk phones. Instead, they rely
on softphone technology, using their computer’s onboard microphone or
external USB receiver to place calls. This may be for various reasons:
convenience, cost, portability, or, in some cases, functionality. Since
softphones emulate traditional phone systems, they offer a type of
compromised experience, where the user receives the best of both worlds.
In effect, softphone applications combine powerful services like IM and
face-to-face calling, along with other ordinary features such as caller
ID, mute, and call waiting.
